The Knab: A thriving space with community at its heart

The Knab is a peninsula full of potential and like the rest of Shetland, it is teeming with optimism and overflowing with opportunity. The redevelopment of the site, following the relocation of Anderson High School, will create a vibrant, thriving space which has community at its heart, contributing to Shetland’s plans for a net zero future, which both energises the islands and propels the country’s renewables revolution.

The Knab sits at the south end of Lerwick, just a five minute walk from the town centre offering huge potential for further housing in Lerwick with additional proposals for a creative hub, student accommodation and other public spaces, with scenic walks and nature on the doorstep.

It has been a long-standing aspiration to develop the site into a thriving community which showcases the benefits and opportunities of island life. Some plans for the site may be subject to change as the development progresses.

Combining Shetland’s unique history with an ambitious shared vision for the future the Knab will be far more than just a new housing development. This will bring a key site into public use, with an innovative approach to address the islands’ challenges while fostering pride and place in a community centred project.

Project Strands

The redevelopment is critical for retaining and attracting people to live in Scotland’s most northerly islands, with high quality, affordable and sustainable housing; potential to include a creative space to build on Shetland’s flourishing creative sector and provide a hub for nurturing new and existing talent; proposals for student accommodation to support an increase in numbers at UHI Shetland; and plans to use the public spaces to bring together state-of-the-art technology and creativity to further enhance this future-ready development.

In short, the Knab will be a blueprint for showcasing the benefits and opportunities of island life.
